Powerless – The Year the Lights Went Out

Wednesday, January 1

I am ready, but the bride is late. We have to leave very soon, the rain is pouring and by the time we return it will be too dark to write. Yesterday was a flurry of activity with Anna and Jane deciding that they too needed to have clean hair. In the end they carried bucket after bucket of hot water up to the bathroom so they could wash properly, though they shared the water. They asked to borrow the paraffin heater to make the bathroom bearable. I couldn’t blame them, especially Anna, for wanting to look their best for her wedding day. I took them breakfast on a tray and left it outside the sewing room, which is full of their laughter and excitement. And now we must go.
